Following on last year's great fourth place achievement, this year's U-14 Girls travelled to Germany for the Basinus Trophy with some justified hope. And they didn't let themselves, their mentors and parents or the club down!
Here's captain Kelly Livingston's personal diary of the trip for your reading pleasure.
Thursday, May 13
We all met at 3.45am bright and early to set off to the airport. Everyone was in high spirits but the main question of the day was does Tanya have her passport (didn’t want a repeat of last year!)?
We arrived in Germany where we were expecting sun but, sadly, that was not the case.
In the afternoon, the Cabo group went to a swimming pool in which they had great fun before all the serious football began.
That night there was the opening ceremony in which all the tournament’s 62 teams participated. Each team had to walk behind their country’s flag for the parade. After that, there were fireworks which were amazing.
Bed early that night, NOT!
Friday, May 14
Another early start! Cabinteely’s, and the tournament’s, first match (at 8.30am!) was against SJVV from the Netherlands and we won 3-0.
Before each match the girls would sing their Germany song which was ‘All Together Now’.
The second match was against SV Holzwickede from Germany. The girls took the lead early on and finished with a great score of 4-0.
The third match was v SF Heppenheim, also from Germany. The Cabinteely girls really showed off their skill as they won this match 2-0; they really were on a winning streak.
The Cabo girls had won their group and, together with the second placed team, SJVV, and the top two from Group B, Cambridge Girls of Ringsend and home team FSG Bensheim, formed a new group to play for first to fourth places in the tournament.
So began the second phase, with yet one more match that first day, at 4.05pm, in which our girls lost 3-0 against FSG Bensheim (who were the eventual winners of the tournament).
Saturday, May 15
Cabinteely’s first match of the day was against Cambridge Girls from Ringsend. Cabinteely did extremely well in this match and the game finished 1-1 with Cabo scoring an own goal!
Next game was against SJVV with Cabo winning 2-0.
These results left Cabo in a play-off against SJVV for third place. The girls didn’t let us down and won 3-0, to take home the magnificent trophy which can be seen today in the clubhouse trophy cabinet.
That night there was the closing ceremony, where Cabo received the trophy and their medals. Then came the news from Ireland that the ash might be back - looks like we would be staying longer!!!
Sunday, May 16
Another early start as we were going to the theme park. It was a great success and even the adults got on some of the rides. Then the news came that Aer Lingus had cancelled the flight because Dublin Airport was closed. Yippeee!
Monday, May 17
Finally, a lie-in! The entire group headed off to a multi-sports centre for the day. Then it was time to go to the airport. We were on standby so we didn’t know if we were getting on a flight today. Fifteen of the seventeen of us got on the flight. Two of the adults had to get a flight home the next day.
The travelling team was: Kelly Livingston (captain and your scribe), Leah Kelly, Kelsey Clarke, Millie Service, Caroline Stokes, Rachel Doyle, Carissa Smith, Laura Ellard, Katja Pollak, Aoife Horgan and Keely Noctor.
Many thanks to manager Tanya Breen and all the parents who helped organise it.
What a great trip had by all!
